  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from J. C. Danko -- A fresh view of epic battles around Guadalcanal. : I have made a hobby out of reading and studying all I am able about the WW II battles around The island of Guadalcanal and the Solomons chain. The more I find the more I am convinced it was the absolute most critical period in the WW II Pacific theater. The loss of Guadalcanal would have allowed Japan enough leeway to build up an effective defensive barrier around their ill-gotten gains. I have read accounts that concentrated on the epic naval battles, PT Boats, PBy Black Cats, 5th USAAF, US Marines and US Army. They demonstrated the extent of resources and personal sacrifice required to defeat the very capable and professional forces of the Japanese Empire. Both sides threw in everything they had. I am convinced the Allied forces played a better game all around, despite a lack of preparation and some temporarily substandard weapons. Torpedo 8 showed me a side of the battle that I had somehow missed. The effects of a small core of dedicated professional naval aviation attack specialists can not be overrated. The author is right. Torpedo 8 created damage to Japan far out of proportion to their numbers. The book is well written but the reader needs to adjust to the author's somewhat sensationalist style like something out of 1950s men's magazines. All the same, the story keeps the reader going and involved. I finished it in two sittings. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2019 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from JS -- Poorly Written : This book is an affront to the combatants of WWII. The author, who probably was not even alive when the war ended, portrays himself as though a witness and an associate of members of Torpedo 8 ... people who he did not even know, and worse, goes so far as to quote thoughts and narrative conversations among the subjects of his book with no apparent authority or documentation. This book is poorly written and reads like the script of a grade B Hollywood production. It is loosely centered around events that occurred in the Southwest Pacific in WWII ... a phase of our history for which we should all be proud. This is a shameful characterization and portrayal of the events and people involved. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2019 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Charles H. Berlemann -- A little weak on facts : By the time I finished the first chapter, I had to go back and check the date of publication. While it seems to be a recent book, it reads like many of the books I read as a pre-teen back in the 50s which were written during WWII. More cheerleading for American military than objective views of what was going on. This is not to say that the guys in Torpedo 8 were not heroes, they most assuredly were. This book’s portrayal of Sweede Larson misses a few aspects of his character. He was a talented torpedo plane pilot and very brave when we needed brave men in 1942. He was also known as a “sundowner” who treated his subordinates with varying degrees of contempt. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lance LaFata -- A story of one of those men who helped win world war two in the Pacific. : A story of a hero who would never consider he did anything but his duty. True of course, but when men like Swede Larsen do their duty, terrible things happen to the enemy. Swede gets the credit from me for all the damage they did to the enemy. Like a lot of heroes, He led from the front. What a great man and what a great book. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2019 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from AvdRedr -- The understanding of what these men went through will help offset the unwieldiness of this book. : When the cover illustration for a book on a Torpedo Bomber has instead shown a Fighter aircraft, that should be a warning that the author and/or Publisher did not put sufficient effort into making the book into what it could have been. The Torpedo Bomber that Swede Larson and his men trained and fought in was the Grumman “Avenger”, a three man aircraft, designed for carrying a Torpedo, or bombs, internally. What is shown in the illustration appears to be a Vought Corsair F4U, fighter bomber, with it’s classical inverted gull wing design which should have been clear to someone writing on Navel Aviation. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from bcb -- Too superficial for my liking : For me, reading this book was like reading a shopping list. Character development was skimpy. Event after event was chronicled. but it was difficult to place them in the larger context of the war in the South Pacific. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jeff O'Byrne -- HIDDEN GEM AND A HECK OF A STORY : Grew up with the tale of VT-8 at Midway, Ensign Gay and all. Thought the Avenger was so named for them. Written in a 1940’s wartime voice this book deftly corrects and fills out VT-8’s story. And it’s a heck of a story! ( Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2019 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from RAY PERKINS -- WWII Naval air war in the Pacific : I enjoyed the historical aspects of the story; being an aviator, anything having to do with flying I like. My challenge with this book was the style of writing: I felt like I was reading a Dickens Novel in that there were so many additional words in the story that occasionally I got lost in it. Might be me, in that a particular episode of action, I had to stop and refocus on what I was reading. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2021 )
